AI test automation: What works to reduce test failures

The release is ready, but the pipeline is blocked. This is not due to a critical defect, but rather because dozens of automated tests have failed for reasons that are not immediately obvious.

The team spends hours analysing the results, only to realise that most of the failures are false positives caused by minor UI changes. The automation that was intended to speed up delivery is now impeding it.

These tools differ significantly in terms of their level of abstraction, the expertise required and the effort involved in integration. In practice, teams tend to base their decisions less on individual features and more on how well a tool can be integrated into existing technologies, skills and delivery models.

Adoption figures reflect these benefits. Surveys indicate that over half of organisations already use AI for testing purposes, with close to 90 per cent planning to increase their investment in this area further over the coming years. While results vary by organisation, these figures point to a clear and sustained industry-wide trend.

Preconditions and limitations

AI does not eliminate the need for solid foundations. Poor test design, unstable requirements, or missing CI/CD integration limit the effectiveness of AI-based approaches. In addition, AI-generated tests can behave like black boxes, delivering results without always making the underlying logic transparent. Cost is another factor. Enterprise-grade platforms can accelerate adoption, but they require careful evaluation to ensure that expected benefits justify the investment.

Buy a platform or extend existing frameworks?

Organisations typically face a strategic choice. Commercial platforms offer faster onboarding and reduced engineering effort, but this comes at the cost of customisation and transparency. Open-source extensions, on the other hand, provide greater flexibility and control, but require stronger internal expertise and a long-term commitment to maintenance.

There is no universal answer. The right approach depends on organisational maturity, existing tools and quality objectives.

Where is AI-based testing heading?

Several trends are becoming increasingly apparent. For example, generative test design shifts the focus from writing scripts to validating outcomes. Autonomous testing agents explore applications independently and adapt tests during execution. Quality intelligence platforms use analytics to identify risk areas and inform testing strategies.

This intelligence layer is expected to play a central role in the future evolution of test automation.

AI as an enabler, not a replacement

AI is already part of the test automation process, but it will not replace testers. Instead, it will change their role. The true value lies in partnership: AI takes over repetitive and fragile tasks, allowing humans to focus on strategy, creativity and risk management.

In the future, too, AI is set to be used alongside humans to deliver quality at a speed and on a scale that would be difficult to achieve using traditional approaches alone.
