The challenges in transport operations: overview, roaming and data protection
In their daily operations, transport companies’ drivers face a variety of challenges. These include coping with the current traffic situation, complying with legal regulations such as driving and rest times, delivering goods on time and reporting to headquarters on schedule. In order to reduce the workload on transport personnel, the client introduced the use of smartphones at an early stage. Although this development brought new opportunities, it also presented challenges:
The large number of pre-installed apps made it difficult to operate the mobile devices.
Applications running in the background took up bandwidth and thus caused significantly higher mobile phone costs outside EU countries.
The risk posed by malware could have compromised confidential customer data, which would have prevented compliance with the EU GDPR.
To meet these challenges, a solution had to be developed that would make mobile devices easier to use, reduce data transfer to a minimum and protect confidential data. The solution should therefore use company resources as efficiently as possible, make the management of the mobile device fleet as simple as possible and thus put the focus back on transport.
Why 7P? The decision for a powerful MDM solution
In their search for a suitable solution, the client turned to a nearby IT systems provider that, as a 7P sales partner, had already successfully launched several of our MDM systems on the market. After a brief online demo and a one-month trial period, it became clear that 7P MDM was the optimal solution to all existing challenges.

The solutions
Tailor-made 7P MDM
Thanks to its many years of expertise in the field of mobile device management (MDM), 7P was able to configure the required applications and work with the end customer to develop a tailor-made kiosk layout for the devices.
This made it possible to create a user-friendly interface that is optimally tailored to the specific requirements of the end customer. This enabled the driving personnel to operate the end devices efficiently in the short periods between loading/unloading and departure at the customer’s premises.
With the kiosk in place, the devices were fully protected against possible operating errors and then activated for productive use. As part of this process, applications that are not required for operational purposes were also removed in order to protect personal customer data and the company’s productive data on the end device.
7P MDM is responsible for managing all mobile devices used productively by the end customer’s driving personnel. The availability and smooth operation of the devices is ensured by centrally managed app provisioning and maintenance, the rollout of security policies and device restrictions. Only the functions and apps that are actually needed are made visible on the devices.
The mobile logistics app and other smartphone applications are updated wirelessly via OTA (over the air) by 7P MDM, without the need for drivers to take any action.
The result
Improved device management and cost control
The implementation of 7P MDM has significantly simplified operation for drivers by removing all non-work-related functions from the smartphone user interface. Important applications such as the logistics app, navigation tool and email application are now prominently displayed on the device.
Restricting access to certain apps prevents ‘bandwidth hogs’ from driving up mobile phone costs and malware from accessing sensitive data via standard apps.
