The initial situation
BSIK is the municipal rescue organisation for the municipalities of Randers, Favrskov, Norddjurs and Syddjurs, covering an area of over 2,700 km² in Denmark.
It is responsible for more than 225,000 citizens and responds to approximately 1,600 fires, rescue operations, traffic accidents and environmental incidents each year.
A fast, accurate and reliable emergency call system is therefore of fundamental importance. It must ensure that the emergency services can respond within the legal framework to save lives and protect property.
Time, accurate data and an overview of the currently available emergency services are therefore important factors in emergency response.
An analysis carried out by students at Aalborg University showed that the solution used by BSIK to date had technological gaps. The existing system therefore needed to be replaced with a more modern, flexible and efficient solution. Following a market analysis and testing of various solutions at BSIK, it was decided to develop and build the solution from scratch.
Why 7P?
The decision to choose 7P MDM was based on a recommendation from the main contractor, Next-Concept A/S, with whom 7P has been working successfully on various projects for many years. Another decisive factor was that 7P, as the leading MDM provider in the public sector in Denmark, also has extensive experience in the transport and logistics sector and in the management of rugged devices.
7P maintains close relationships with various device manufacturers, enabling 7P to optimally integrate the devices into the solution and thus provide customers with the best possible solution.
The solution
Software
For the actual alarm solution on mobile devices and the associated backend, BSIK relies on the IHM PAM (Person Alarm Manager) product from the Danish company IHM A/S. The new client-server solution was continuously developed and optimised during the project phase from early 2021 until its launch in April 2023 in accordance with the requirements specified by BSIK. The solution now offers significantly faster alarms and response times. Fire departments also have a better overview of the status of their own and other fire departments’ readiness.
Hardware
In terms of hardware, the choice fell on the RG360 from RugGear, a handy yet robust device that is ideal for use in critical situations. The RugGear RG360 is an Android device with a 3.0-inch screen and Android 10 Go, which meets the requirements of BSIK employees for a stable pager device. When selecting the device, it was also important that it did not look like a phone/smartphone, but resembled a pager as closely as possible so that firefighters and rescue workers could operate it quickly and easily during use.
Device management
Throughout the project, 7P provided intensive support with its comprehensive technical knowledge in implementation, configuration and setup, working closely with RugGear in China to develop special firmware for the RG360 device for this project.
The aim was to embed 7P MDM firmly in the RG360 firmware so that the device could be activated as easily as possible in the 7P MDM console. The device was then fully secured and put into productive use. The smartphone functions were also removed so that the device could not be used as a ‘freely available telephone’ and thus no taxes would be incurred for BSIK employees.
7P MDM manages all mobile devices, from RugGear RG360 pager devices to the tablets used in vehicles.
This ensures the availability and smooth operation of the devices through centrally managed app provisioning and maintenance, rollout of security policies and device restrictions, with only the functions and apps that are actually needed visible on the devices.
7P MDM updates the IHM PAM mobile application and other apps wirelessly via OTA (over the air) without any user intervention.
In addition, 7P MDM deploys the Teamviewer remote support software to all end devices, enabling BSIK administration to perform tasks on mobile devices without having to involve employees.
The result
- All information is now reliable and available in real time.
- Better data for the correct assignment of employees to the right tasks.
- The operations management team knows exactly which personnel will be on duty and what tasks they will perform.
- Monthly deviation reports are now zero.
- Significant savings in compensation for lost time for part-time employees and volunteers, as only the resources actually needed are used.
- Reduction in transport/logistics costs and lower CO2 emissions.
- Additional savings in working hours, travel time and transport costs through the rollout of remote support and centralised management via 7P MDM.
- The devices are preconfigured via 7P MDM and are ready for immediate use.
- The RugGear RG360 is a smart ‘pager’ without telephony and is therefore exempt from income tax.
- Financial break-even of the investment in the third year.
- Significant savings in subsequent years in investment and operation of the new solution compared to the old one.
